An Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court on Thursday remanded  a 55-year-old man, Ngozi Igwe, who allegedly sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl.

Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat ordered that the defendant should  be kept  in the Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, pending  advice from the state director of public prosecutions.

Thus, the court did not take the plea of the defendant.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 23 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant, a resident of Junaid Street in Igbo-Efon, Lekki, Lagos, was charged on one count.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi,  had told the court that the defendant committed the sexual assault in October 2018  and November 2018,  at his residence.

Emuerhi alleged that the defendant sexually assaulted his neighbour’s seven -year-old daughter  by putting his finger on the child’s private part.

He submitted that the case was reported at the Maroko Police Division by the victim’s father and later transferred to the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for further investigation.

He noted that the alleged offence contravened Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
